The Authoritarian Regime of Lukashenko Caused a Potato Shortage in Belarus
As a result of the shortage, the government banned the export of potatoes without a special license starting December 2024. Many farmers began labeling healthy potatoes as spoiled and continued supplying them to Russia, where they sold for twice the price compared to Belarus.
Eventually, the authorities raised potato prices and lifted the ban on food imports from 'unfriendly' EU countries, hoping to improve the situation. Experts believe that while the situation is gradually improving, it reflects the ineffectiveness of Lukashenko's policies and his attempts to stay in power at any cost.
Ukrainian farmers are cautiously monitoring the developments in Belarus, as similar political decisions may affect the potato market in the region and force them to change their product supply strategies.
