Germany introduces a ban on family reunification for refugees

The German government has decided to suspend the possibility of family entry for refugees with temporary protection status for two years. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt explains this decision by stating that the country has reached the limits of its integration capabilities. In particular, since 2018, Germany had allowed up to a thousand relatives of refugees to enter each month, but now this quota will be abolished, except in extremely severe cases.

This decision will particularly affect Syrian families, as they make up the majority of the over 350,000 people with temporary protection in Germany. Temporary protection does not guarantee the possibility of family reunification, so this group of people risks ending up in isolation.

However, this decision has received criticism from human rights activists who warn that it violates the right to family and may drive people to dangerous illegal actions. It is noteworthy that in 2024, Germany issued around 120,000 visas for reunification, and now this option for refugees with temporary protection is being terminated.
