Verification of Water Meters - When is it Conducted and Who Pays for It

All water consumers in Ukraine must regularly check their water meters to ensure they are functioning properly. This requirement has been explained by the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection. The verification is usually paid for by the consumer themselves.

How the verification of water meters is conducted, when, and who should do it, has been explained by the .

Who has the Right to Check Water Meters

Verification can only be carried out by specialized institutions with the appropriate permits, such as calibration laboratories or scientific metrology centers. The procedure typically takes up to 5 days and includes the disassembly and reinstallation of the meter in the presence of the owner, as well as documentation of all stages. Some companies may offer verification without disassembly, but this may cost more.

If a company initiates the verification, it must notify the consumer no later than 30 days in advance. If the consumer is the initiator, the verification date must be agreed upon within 3 days.

Who Pays for the Verification

According to the law, all costs for verification, maintenance, repair, disassembly, and reinstallation of the meters are borne by their owner. This may be a resident, a supply company, or a managing organization (for example, a homeowners' association). Who specifically pays for the verification depends on the terms of the water supply contract. If a resident has an individual contract, they pay for the verification themselves. In the absence of a separate contract, the supplier organizes the verification, and the cost is included in the monthly payment for water.
