National deputy, vice chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights Ruslan Gorbenko reported that the Security Service of Ukraine will check former citizens of Russia, Belarus, and individuals who lived in temporarily occupied territories and seek to obtain Ukrainian citizenship. This information was provided by 'Glavcom', referring to 'Ukrinform'.
Some MPs were against the adoption of the law on dual citizenship, believing that some of its provisions are imperfect. They think that former citizens of Russia and Belarus who have citizenship of another country, such as a European one, will try to obtain a Ukrainian passport. However, our Security Service works diligently, noted Gorbenko.
Ruslan Gorbenko also explained that individuals wishing to obtain Ukrainian citizenship will undergo special checks. If they meet certain criteria, such as knowledge of the Ukrainian language, history, and attitude towards Ukraine, they may receive citizenship.

Obtaining citizenship for citizens of the Russian Federation and Belarus

The law provides a procedure for obtaining citizenship for individuals who have citizenship of Russia and Belarus and have undergone political persecution or serve military duty in favor of Ukraine. It also allows for a declarative refusal of foreign citizenship for those who cannot return to their country.
Authorities will conduct special checks on individuals who obtained a Russian passport in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Those who collaborate with the aggressor must leave Ukraine after its de-occupation, noted Gorbenko.
The law on dual citizenship, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, provides Ukrainian citizens the opportunity to hold several passports from different countries and establishes conditions for this. The Ukrainian Security Service will conduct checks on former citizens of Russia, Belarus, and individuals from occupied territories who have applied for Ukrainian citizenship. If the individual meets the established criteria, they may obtain Ukrainian citizenship provided they pass special checks and comply with legal requirements. Parliament member Ruslan Gorbenko spoke about the checks conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine regarding former citizens of Russia, Belarus, and individuals from occupied territories who intend to obtain Ukrainian citizenship. He noted that the law on dual citizenship provides special conditions for obtaining citizenship for such individuals.
